Make the routine smaller

A useful wind-down does not need twelve steps. Choose a consistent transition away from work and stimulation, then add one relaxation practice you can repeat.

Breathing as one tool

Slow breathing may improve self-reported sleep measures in some studies, but it is better framed as a relaxation tool than a guaranteed sleep switch.

Other relaxation options

Progressive muscle relaxation also has a research base. The best routine is one that is comfortable, sustainable and does not turn bedtime into another source of pressure.

If the problem keeps returning

Repeated difficulty falling or staying asleep may warrant professional assessment, especially when it affects daytime functioning or occurs alongside breathing problems during sleep.
